CHANGING MY APPROACH

I have been calling working in sports broadcasting and calling play-by-play since I was a university student in the mid 90's . I started started getting paid for it a little more than 20 years ago. I am north of 50, and I know that I could be the play-by-play voice or even host at a network, or of a professional team.

Just knowing your call is at that level is not enough to get you to that next level. You need luck, timing and exemplary networking skills. Those networking skills can help you with the whole luck and timing thing.

I have had some really, really cool experiences through my career, and I'll spare you the details and the cover letters, but I have been fortunate. Many more have not worked out due to bad luck, bad timing and less than stellar networking skills.

Networking is where I struggle the most and it is mostly due to not really being able to build and sustain those key relationships. Clumsy, ill-timed and ill-phrased emails have hindered my progress. Same with not leaving well enough alone and being persistent when the best approach is to lay back and try to be cool.

It is a difficult balance to manage, but as that fine line between success, and failure narrows, I am sharpening my skill-set.

I will be laser focused on changing trends in the broadcasting world, and building meaningful, genuine connections. Leveraging relationships, Sharpening up my investigative skills, being proactive and forthcoming are front and centre. It's the only way I know how to operate.

As the sports broadcasting world evolves, and gets younger, more diverse and crowded, I know I can rise above them all. and blaze my own trail.
